Game 5 Victory Keeps Stanley Cup Dreams Alive

DALLAS -- Cale Makar scored two goals and the Colorado Avalanche avoided elimination by defeating the Dallas Stars 5-1 in Game 5 of the Western Conference Second Round on Wednesday night.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first period, the Avalanche rallied back with a dominant second period, scoring three goals to take a 3-1 lead. Makar started the scoring with a power-play goal at 1:23, followed by Nathan MacKinnon's equalizer at 11:26 and Evan Rodrigues' go-ahead goal at 16:45.

In the third period, Makar extended the lead to 4-1 with his second goal of the game at 10:23. Miles Wood sealed the victory with an empty-net goal at 18:00.

Avalanche goaltender Alexandar Georgiev made 23 saves to help his team snap a three-game losing streak. Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger stopped 28 shots in the loss.

MacKinnon extended his point streak to nine games with his goal and assist, while Makar now has 10 points (3 goals, 7 assists) in the 2024 playoffs. The Avalanche also got goals from Evan Rodrigues and Devon Toews.

The series now shifts back to Denver for Game 6 on Friday night. The Stars will need to win to force a Game 7, while the Avalanche will look to close out the series and advance to the Western Conference Final.

The Avalanche's victory keeps their Stanley Cup dreams alive, while the Stars' season hangs in the balance. With the series tied 3-2, Game 6 promises to be a thrilling and decisive matchup.
