Northern Lights to be Visible in Chicago Area Due to Geomagnetic Storm

Chicagoans Prepare for Celestial Display

Lights Visible Saturday Night, Best Viewing Away from City

A rare geomagnetic storm is providing Chicagoans with the opportunity to witness the Northern Lights this weekend. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the storm could make the aurora borealis visible across a large portion of the U.S., including Illinois.

For the best viewing, experts recommend traveling away from the city to avoid light pollution. The GOES-16 satellite has captured images of the solar eruption, and scientists predict that the aurora will be visible between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Saturday night.
