The 2024 MLB Draft lottery was held at the annual winter meetings in Nashville on Tuesday, and even with a change in the lottery format, the top three picks remained the same. However, the Mets, Padres, and Yankees all saw their first picks drop 10 spots due to the new format.
The new lottery format gives the worst team in baseball a 16.5% chance of winning the No. 1 overall pick, while the second-worst team gets a 15.5% chance, and so on. The previous format gave the worst team a 25% chance of winning the No. 1 pick.
The Mets, who finished with the worst record in baseball in 2023, had a 16.5% chance of winning the No. 1 overall pick under the new format. However, they ended up drawing the No. 11 pick.
The Padres, who finished with the second-worst record in baseball in 2023, had a 15.5% chance of winning the No. 1 overall pick under the new format. However, they ended up drawing the No. 12 pick.
The Yankees, who finished with the third-worst record in baseball in 2023, had a 14.5% chance of winning the No. 1 overall pick under the new format. However, they ended up drawing the No. 13 pick.
